Charlie Elphicke’s cliffside house has been sold for £ 700,000 in profit after the disgraced former MP lost his job and was forced to claim Universal Credit following his prison sentence.

Elphicke, 50, lived on the property in Dover, Kent, with his ex-wife Natalie, 51, before being sentenced to two years in prison for sexual assault, half of which he served behind bars.

The St Margaret’s Bay house, which has an office, veranda, cellar and stunning views over the bay, was purchased for £ 825,000 in August 2012, but the property fell sold for £ 1,525,000 in March 2021.

Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court had heard that Elphicke received £ 51,000 from the sale of her marital home, but most of that money was spent on ‘legal fees and rent’.

Elphicke’s lawyer Ian Winter QC told the court his client was “in a lot of debt” and his ex-wife Natalie Elphicke, now MP for Dover, loaned him £ 100,000 to pay the bills legal.

Elphicke, who was released from prison in September after serving half of his sentence, had been taken to court for allegedly failing to pay £ 35,000 in prosecution costs following his sentence for sexually assaulting two women .

Elphicke and Natalie – who had been married for 25 years but divorced – were living together on the property before her career was ruined by revelations of her sexual assault shame. His wife Natalie succeeded him as MP for Dover in 2019.

But the house, with stunning views over the English Channel near the port of Dover, the property is scheduled to be demolished by the new owners.

In the wake of the Elphicke affair, the Commons Standards Committee found that five Conservatives, including his wife Natalie, had violated the code of conduct for a “blatant” attempt to influence its legal process.

As a result, Ms Elphicke, Sir Roger Gale and Theresa Villiers were suspended from the House of Commons for a day.

Along with Bob Stewart and Adam Holloway, they had written to senior members of the judiciary, expressing concerns that a more junior judge was considering releasing the character references provided to Mr. Elphicke.

Elphicke became government whip during David Cameron’s tenure as prime minister in 2015, but returned to the backbench when Theresa May came to power the following year.

He had the party whip suspended in 2017 when allegations of sexual assault first surfaced, but he was controversially reinstated a year later in a crucial vote of confidence against the then prime minister , Ms. May.

The whip was removed again the following summer when the Crown Prosecution Service announced its decision to indict Elphicke.

The former MP, who was first elected in 2010, said in December last year he had paid six months’ rent in advance for an apartment in Fulham, south west London , valued online at nearly £ 475,000.

At another hearing last month, Elphicke said he had applied for universal credit and said: “I have no job, I have no career, I am long-term unemployed.

“I am working with the employment agency and my probation officer to find a new career.
